Mexico’s government has announced that it will purchase 12 to 20 million doses of China’s covid vaccine.
To date, there is little published data about the vaccine’s effectiveness.
Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said the Mexican government would purchase 12 million doses of China’s Sinovac vaccine, called Coronavac, with the option to increase the order to 20 million doses.
Deliveries of the Chinese vaccine are to begin in March and be completed by July.
To date, Mexico has administered about 4.7 million vaccines.
Causing concern, Foreign Minister Ebrard’s office has refused to release data about the effectiveness of the Chinese vaccine.
While Chinese officials claim their vaccine is 79 percent effective in protecting against coronavirus, it has never released data about its vaccine.
Twenty-five countries are now using Chinese vaccines.
Mexico has suffered almost 190,100 confirmed Covid deaths. But because Mexico performs so little testing, that number might be closer to 220,000 or more deaths from Covid, as of the start of January.
