United Nations Security Council expressed deep concern regarding the closure of schools for teenage girls and asked the de facto authorities in Afghanistan to reopen the schools for all female students without further delay.
The UNSC in a press release said that the members heard a briefing on March 25 by Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons in regards to the right to education for all Afghans.
Members of the UNSC reaffirmed the right to education for all Afghans, including girls.
“UNSC member asked Deborah Lyons to continue to engage with all relevant Afghan political actors and stakeholders, including relevant authorities, on the issue, according to the mandate of UNAMA, and keep the UNSC informed on progress.” Reads the press release.
As per the statement, the members highlighted the importance of efforts by the international community to support Afghanistan, including education adding the coordination of UANAM to be vital in this regard.
Further, the UNSC reaffirmed its support for the people of Afghanistan.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in March 23rd banned teenage girls from attending classes upper than grade 6th until further notice.
