Within the next year, every home in Wales will get a free tree to plant as part of the Welsh government’s climate change strategy.
Individuals may either pick their own tree to plant or have a tree planted on their behalf.
The first trees will be available for collection at one of five regional community centers that will be established in March next year, with a further twenty hubs to be established by October 2022 as part of the program, which is being managed in partnership with the Woodland Trust.
The government argues that increasing tree cover is necessary not just to avert catastrophic climate change, but also to improve residents’ welfare and generate green employment.
There is evidence that places with a high tree cover have a reduced crime rate “According to Lee Waters, the deputy minister for climate change.
Waters feels the program may assist, but that more trees are required to combat the climate catastrophe.
“However, in order to reach our climate change commitments, we must plant 86 million trees by the decade’s end. That is a 15-fold rise per year.”
According to the deputy minister, a consultation process on proposals to establish a National Forest in Wales will begin in early 2022.
We wish to include individuals from all walks of life in establishing the National Forest for Wales.”
