Unfortunately, the enemy media resort to false news to justify the illegitimate and unjustified presence of extra-regional countries in the Persian Gulf, Rear Admiral Abbas Gholamshahi said.

On Monday, United States Navy claimed that its sailors and the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy came to the aid of a ship in the crucial Strait of Hormuz after IRGC allegedly “harassed” it.

The issue of providing security, aid, and timely response to requests for help from vessels and ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf will be definitely continued, Gholamshahi said in reaction to baseless news against the IRGC navy.

At the moment when the merchant ship called for help, no trans-regional vessel was present, and this claim was completely false, Gholamshahi said.

The Islamic Republic of Iran emphasizes its position that maintaining the security of the Persian Gulf is the responsibility of the countries of this region, he added.

Persian Gulf states enjoy the power and capacity to establish stable security in the Persian Gulf, and they do not need the presence of foreign countries in the region, he said.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on Tuesday launched a large-scale military exercise in southern Iran, which was the largest of its kind in the region.

The war game, codenamed Payambar-e Azam 14 (The Great Prophet 14), was conducted in the southern province of Hormozgan, western parts of the Strait of Hormuz.

In the drills, the IRGC’s Navy and Aerospace Forces carry out joint operations in which vessels, drones, missile and radar units were involved.

The drills were monitored by Iran’s Nour-1 (Light-1) satellite, a multi-purpose Iranian domestically developed satellite that was successfully launched into space on April 22.

IRGC launched its first missile from underground, which were stored and fired from underneath the earth’s surface.

The successful launch of ballistic missiles against the hypothetical enemies was among the measures of the drill. The launch of such missiles, which were camouflaged and fired from the depths of the ground, could pose serious challenges to the enemy intelligence agencies in the event of a serious challenge.

Moreover, IRGC drones attacked the enemy’s simulated aircraft carrier and targeted the vessel’s bridge.

The servicemen attending the war game exercised offensive operations using missiles, drones and vessels, offensive mine-laying operations and tactics to cut off the naval connections of the hypothetical enemy, missile combat operations using helicopters, and launch of coast-to-sea missiles.

Issuing a statement, IRGC said that the message of the Payambar-e Azam 14 exercise to friendly and neighboring countries was love, peace, and friendship along with the authority and strength of the Revolutionary Guards and collective security for the countries of the Persian Gulf region.

Stating that Iran has never started a war, IRGC said that it would give a decisive and crushing response to any aggression against the country’s territorial integrity, security, and national interests.

Some experts believe that the IRGC’s military exercise and ballistic missiles that were launched from underground platforms was a serious warning to Iran’s enemies, including the United States.

In this regard, Indian security expert and analyst retired Major General Harsha Kakar said, “The Iranian domestic defense industry has been able to meet the needs of its forces. Its development in the field of missiles has enabled it to deter nations from attacking it.”

“A nation which possesses deterrence in the region ensures regional stability. It displays that it has the ability to respond to any threat and the attacker would suffer a similar level of damage,” he added.

“The message of the drill is that Iran can defend itself, is not a pushover and would retaliate against US bases and allies in the region,” Kakar noted.

Colonel Anatoly Tsyganok, a member of the Russian Center for Political-Military Studies believes that the recent IRGC’s military exercise was a serious warning to the enemies of Iran, especially the United States.

“During the recent military exercise of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran demonstrated its strength in the sea and air, as well as its progress in this field,” he said.

“The exercise once again demonstrated Iran’s strengths in having fast naval units and long-range tactical missiles,” he added, saying, “With such armed forces in Iran, no country would dare to attack it because it would most likely have to accept defeat and retreat with heavy casualties.”

In a report published by China Radio International, it also pointed to the power and deterrence of the Iranian missiles, saying that the US should understand the message of the recent drill by the IRGC.

“A significant point of the drill was that IRGC destroyed a mock-up of US’ Nimitz-class carriers with its missiles in the area of the war game,” said the report.

“Iran has actually welcomed the US’ Nimitz-class carrier [that is entering the region] with launching missiles at its mock-up. There is no doubt that with the measure, Iran is trying to display its firm determination in defending its rights and standing against the enemy.”

“Iran has the “most powerful missile power” of the region and equipped with different mid-range and long-range missiles.”

“All the US military bases around Iran are under the range of the Iranian missiles.”

American analyst Stephen Lendman said that Iran’s significant military capabilities would prevent a US attack and contributes to eventual regional peace and stability.

“On the issue of Iran’s defense capabilities, the one positive thing about US sanctions war on the country is it’s made it much more self-reliant. When this storm passes, as it will one day, Iran will be a more major player on the world stage than already,” he said.

“It would be madness for the US to attack Iran militarily because it’s a nation able to hit back hard against an aggressor, making it pay a big price for its actions. I strongly believe the Pentagon wants no part of a war on Iran, knowing they’ll be significant US casualties and destruction of its regional capabilities,” Lendman stressed.

A former US government adviser described recent decisions by Washington to impose more economic pressures on Tehran as a provocative move and said the Islamic Republic has nonetheless “chosen the least confrontational way possible to respond”.

“But Iran cannot ignore the provocation, and has chosen the least confrontational way possible to respond under the (current) circumstances,” Paul Larudee from San Francisco said in an interview with the Tasnim News Agency.

He further pointed to threats posed by the US, Saudi Arabia, and Israel against Iran, which can “push even farther toward war” and said, “Let us hope that wisdom prevails, even in response to a paucity of wise policymakers in those three countries.”

Larudee is an Iranian-born American political activist and human rights volunteer, who works with the International Solidarity Movement. He is a former contracted US government adviser to Saudi Arabia and a founder of the Free Gaza and Free Palestine Movements.

Following is the full text of the interview:

On Friday, US President Donald Trump’s administration renewed five of seven sanctions waivers that allow Russia and European nations to conduct civilian nuclear cooperation with Iran but revoked the other two as part of its pressure campaign against Tehran, according to the US State Department. Washington also stopped issuing waivers to buy Iranian crude oil on Thursday. Before the US moves, Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, had warned the US against their consequences. “…If our oil is not to be shipped over through the Strait of Hormuz, then the oil of others will definitely not go through the strait either,” Major General Baqeri said last week. Zarif also warned that leaving the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is one of Iran’s “numerous” choices in the wake of tightened US sanctions. What is your assessment of the developments and how do you think about Iran’s possible reaction to the US decision?

Larudee: This is commonly called “posturing”, which is what individuals and nations do when they want to respond to threats without going to war. It is equivalent to the ancient practice of displaying your soldiers side by side on the hilltops to show how big an army you have, usually hoping that the other side will see the wisdom of withdrawing from the fight. Iran is trying to show that no one wins by taking actions that harm the other nation. By showing the options that Iran has, but not actually using those options, Iran hopes that the US and its allies will listen to reason and de-escalate the situation. Of course, the US, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and others may choose to see this expression of options as a threat and respond with actions that push even farther toward war. But Iran cannot ignore the provocation and has chosen the least confrontational way possible to respond under the circumstances. Let us hope that wisdom prevails, even in response to a paucity of wise policymakers in those three countries.

As you know, Zarif was recently in the US. In multiple interviews with US media outlets and a roundtable with reporters in New York last week, he made the case that a group dubbed “the B-Team” was goading the US toward conflict with Iran, not Trump. The B-team is a group of advisers and foreign leaders whose names share the same letter: National Security Adviser John Bolton, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu, Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ). What is your take on Zarif’s remarks? How do you assess the message of his trip to the US?

Larudee: “B-Team” can have a double meaning, as Zarif well knows. It can refer to the coincidence that B is the initial letter of many of their names, but it can also mean that it is inferior to the “A” Team. In fact, all of the persons mentioned are plainly inferior policymakers and tend to substitute arrogance for diplomacy, and aggression for cooperation and mutual benefit. Zarif’s message is that the US is putting its government in the hands of incompetent people, making bad alliances, and moving in the direction of catastrophe for itself as well as its victims. He also presented the case that Iran is not a threat to anyone, even Israel, but that it will not allow its rights to be violated indefinitely.

Zarif recently said he plans to visit North Korea in the near future. What do you think about possible objectives behind his trip and do you think that it would have links with his recent trip to the US?

Larudee: Given the threats of the US against both Iran and North Korea, it makes sense to explore how they can cooperate. But it’s also a message to the US, especially since North Korea is a nuclear nation. Without uttering a single word about nuclear weapons, Iran is making the statement that it’s better to find a peaceful way to resolve differences than to force Iran to explore new options in how to defend itself. This is the significance of traveling to North Korea immediately following the visit to the US.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a gathering of Police commanders in Tehran on Sunday, Major General Baqeri said the Iranian Armed Forces are in charge of security of the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran wants the Strait of Hormuz to remain open with sustained security, he noted, saying the Iranian oil and commodities are being freighted through the strait just like the shipments of other countries.

“If anybody is to make the Strait of Hormuz unsafe, we will certainly counter it, and if our oil is not to be shipped over through the Strait of Hormuz, then the oil of others will definitely not go through the strait either,” the top general underlined.

“This would not mean the closure of Strait of Hormuz, we have no intention of closing it, unless the enmity of enemies would reach a limit that there is no other choice. That day, we will be fully capable of closing the strait,” Major General Baqeri added.

Highlighting Iran’s strict control over the southern waters, the commander said American warships and trade vessels have to respond to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy when crossing the Strait of Hormuz several times a day.

He said the most recent reporters show that American forces continue to respond to the IRGC Navy’s questions and there is no sign of a change in their behavior at the Strait of Hormuz.

In comments on April 24, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said the US’ attempts to block the export of Iranian oil will get nowhere as Tehran will be exporting any amount of crude it needs and wants.

Describing a cut in Iran’s reliance on the export of oil as an opportunity, the Leader said such an opportunity will be used for further reliance on internal capabilities.

“Although the sanctions pave the way for problems in certain cases, they will benefit the country if they are dealt with correctly and logically,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Last week, the White House said that US President Donald Trump “has decided not to reissue” waivers regarding sanctions against countries importing Iranian oil when the waivers expire in early May.
