The Islamic Resistance in Lebanon, Hezbollah has announced that it targeted Israeli enemy soldiers in the Shomera settlement (the occupied Lebanese town of Tarbikha) and their equipment near the Dovive Barracks, in support of the Palestinian people in Gaza and in response to Israeli attacks on southern villages and civilian homes.

In a statement, the Hezbollah forces reported targeting a building used by enemy soldiers in Shomera at 7:30 AM on Sunday morning with appropriate weapons.

At 9:30 AM, they targeted newly developed espionage equipment near the Dovive Barracks, destroying it.

Less than an hour later, at 10:20 AM, the Islamic Resistance targeted Israeli enemy soldiers’ deployment points south of the Jal al-Alam site with Burkan missiles.

After the Israeli enemy replaced the targeted spy equipment at the Misgav Am site, the Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance destroyed it again at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2024, using appropriate weapons.

Yesterday evening at 8:50 p.m., the Islamic Resistance fighters targeted a Hummer military vehicle in the Netu’a settlement with a guided missile, leading to its destruction.

In the same series of attacks, Al-Manar’s correspondent reported that at 1:10 a.m., Israeli enemy warplanes launched a missile strike targeting the “Wadi Al-Asafir” neighborhood in the city of Khiam.

At 7:20 a.m., a number of enemy shells fell on the outskirts of the town of Mays Al-Jabal, with additional shells falling on Maadiyya on the outskirts of the town of Hula.

Israeli warplanes also targeted the towns of Naqoura and Majdal Zoun with two missile strikes, and launched an air strike with missiles on the town of Aita al-Shaab, the Hezbollah’s statement said, according to its news service, Al-Manar TV English website.

Additionally, an air strike with missiles targeted the “Al-Jabour” heights near Al-Qatrani.

1435 GMT — Israel’s Gaza aid openings ‘not enough’: EU chief

European Council President Charles Michel has said that Israel’s announcement to temporarily open aid routes into Gaza was “not enough” given the scale of the humanitarian crisis there.

“Gazan children and infants are dying of malnutrition. Substantial and urgent efforts are required to immediately end hunger as an instrument of war in Gaza,” Michel wrote on X.

“Israel’s announcement to reopen temporarily the Erez crossing point as well as to allow aid to enter through the Ashdod port is not enough.”

1431 GMT — Israeli fire ‘most likely’ killed woman hostage on Oct 7: army

An Israeli investigation found that an Israeli woman who had been seized during the October 7 attack was “most likely” killed when a combat helicopter fired on her kidnappers’ vehicle.

Efrat Katz and most of the Hamas members in the vehicle were killed when the Israeli aircraft fired on them on October 7, the army investigation said.

The helicopter “fired at a vehicle that had terrorists in it, and which, in retrospect, based on the testimonies, also had hostages in it,” the army said in a statement. “As a result of the fire, most of the terrorists manning the vehicle were killed, and most likely, Efrat Katz … was killed as well.”

1408 GMT — Israeli police arrest 11 Palestinians in vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque

Israeli police have arrested 11 Palestinians in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem.

Police said three Palestinians were held in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque after the end of Friday prayers. In a separate statement, police said “8 individuals were arrested following their participation in incendiary chants” after Fajr, the early morning prayer.

1340 GMT — UN ‘deeply troubled’ over Israeli use of AI to identify targets

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed serious concern over reports that Israel was using artificial intelligence to identify targets in Gaza.

Guterres said that he was “deeply troubled by reports that the Israeli military’s bombing campaign includes Artificial Intelligence as a tool in the identification of targets, particularly in densely populated residential areas, resulting in a high level of civilian casualties.”

“No part of life and death decisions which impact entire families should be delegated to the cold calculation of algorithms,” he said.

1320 GMT — US carefully reviewing Israel’s inquiry: Blinken

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the US is carefully reviewing Israel’s inquiry into the strike that killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers this week, adding that Washington will be looking very carefully at what steps Israel is taking.

“It’s very important that Israel is taking full responsibility for this incident. It’s also important that it appears to be taking steps to hold those responsible accountable. Even more important is that steps are being taken going forward to ensure that something like this can never happen again,” Blinken told reporters in Brussels.

1207 GMT — WCK demands independent commission, says Israel cannot investigate its own ‘failure’

Aid charity World Central Kitchen has demanded an independent commission to investigate the killings of its staff in an Israeli air strike in Gaza, saying the Israeli military could not credibly investigate its own “failure”.

“Without systemic change, there will be more military failures, more apologies and more grieving families,” according to a statement published by WCK.

1116 GMT — Poland demands ‘criminal inquiry’ by Israel for ‘murder’ of Gaza aid worker

Poland said that it had demanded a “criminal inquiry” by Israel after what it called the “murder” of seven food charity workers, including a Polish citizen, in a Gaza air strike this week.

“We want [Polish] prosecutors to be added and implicated in the explanations and in the entire criminal and disciplinary procedure for the soldiers responsible for this… murder,” Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Szejna added after Israel’s Warsaw envoy was summoned and issued a formal protest over the strike on the World Central Kitchen workers.

1112 GMT — Israel admits series of ‘grave mistakes’ in killing of WCK staff

Israel admitted a series of “grave mistakes” and violations of its own rules of engagement when it killed foreign aid workers of World Central Kitchen in Gaza this week.

The victims – an Australian, Britons, a North American, a Palestinian and a Pole – were killed in three air strikes over four minutes by an Israeli drone as they ran for their lives between their three vehicles, the military said.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry said it still cannot understand how such an incident could have occurred. It demanded a “criminal inquiry” into Monday’s events.

1036 GMT — Israel announces ‘temporary’ opening of aid routes into Gaza

Israel has announced that it would allow “temporary” aid deliveries into famine-threatened northern Gaza, hours after the United States warned of a sharp shift in its policy over Israel’s war on the enclave.

“Israel will allow the temporary delivery of humanitarian aid” through the Ashdod Port and the Erez land crossing, as well as increased deliveries from neighbouring Jordan at the Kerem Shalom crossing, Netanyahu’s office said.

1026 GMT — Attacks against humanitarian workers may be war crimes: UN

The UN Human Rights Office has said that attacks against people involved in humanitarian assistance may amount to war crimes, following a deadly strike by Israel against aid workers in Gaza.

“Attacking people or objects involved in humanitarian assistance may amount to a war crime,” UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Jeremy Laurence said. “As the High Commissioner has repeatedly stated, impunity must end.”

“The Israeli air strikes that killed World Central Kitchen personnel underline the horrific conditions under which humanitarian workers are operating in Gaza,” Laurence said.

“International law requires all parties to respect and protect humanitarian relief personnel and ensure their safety, security, and freedom of movement.”

0841 GMT — UN rights council calls for halt to arms sales to Israel

The UN Human Rights Council demanded a halt to all arms sales to Israel, highlighting warnings of “genocide” in its war in Gaza, which has killed more than 33,000 people, mostly women and children.

The resolution, which passed with 28 of the council’s 47 member states voting in favour, six opposed and 13 abstaining, marked the first time the United Nations top rights body has taken a position on the bloodiest-ever war to beset the besieged Palestinian enclave.

0730 GMT — Video reveals Israeli army deliberately shooting at Palestinians rushing to collect aid in Gaza

An international news broadcaster released a video showing the Israeli army intentionally targeting Palestinians rushing to collect humanitarian airdrop aid in Gaza.

The new footage obtained by Al Jazeera begins with a warplane dropping aid near the northern border fence of Gaza.

In the video, a group of young Palestinians can be seen running to reach a spot to collect humanitarian aid.

Despite no apparent threat, young Palestinians are seen approaching to collect aid, but the Israeli army suddenly fires intermittently at them.

Israel has said it will allow “temporary” aid deliveries via its fence with northern Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced, hours after a warning from US President Joe Biden.

“Israel will allow the temporary delivery of humanitarian aid through Ashdod and the Erez checkpoint [Beit Hanoun crossing],” the statement from the prime minister’s office said, referring to a port about 40 kilometres north of Gaza and a land crossing.

Herzi Halevi dismissed the commander of the tainted Nahal Brigade — one of the army’s main infantry brigades — and another senior commander within the same brigade, according to Israel’s Channel 14.

Halevi issued an apology on Wednesday for the Israeli strike. He said the incident occurred as a result of a “misidentification” that happened “during a war in very complex conditions.”

Despite coordinating movements with the Israeli army, the humanitarian organisation said the convoy was hit “car by car” as it was leaving a warehouse in the city of Deir al Balah in central Gaza, where the team had unloaded more than 100 tonnes of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza on a maritime route.

The designation covers the entirety of the group, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported. Hezbollah’s military wing has been on the list since 2003.

In May, the United States had called on governments worldwide to take action against Hezbollah.

Last month, Saudi Arabia classified the Lebanon-based Al-Qard Al-Hassan association as a “terrorist” entity, citing links to activities supporting Hezbollah.

Australia also listed the global neo-Nazi group The Base as a “terrorist” organization, making it a criminal offense to be a member.

“The Government has zero-tolerance for violence, and there is no cause – religious or ideological – that can justify killing innocent people,” Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said in a statement announcing the new classifications.

The ABC said that Australia’s domestic intelligence agency was increasingly concerned about right-wing extremism and white supremacists and that members of The Base now account for about a third of its investigations.

The United Kingdom and Canada have already added the organization to their “terrorist” lists.

Prior to Wednesday’s announcement, Australia had classified 26 groups as “terrorist” organizations, including ISIL (ISIS), Boko Haram, and Abu Sayyaf.

On the eve of the anniversary of the 2006 July War between Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Israel, an exchange of fire took place between the two sides. On the surface, it seemed a minor incident in the perennially unstable West Asia region. But in reality, it was strategically important in terms of reiterating the longstanding red lines along the Lebanon-Israel border.

For more than a decade, the shared borders between Israel and Lebanon have been relatively stable and calm compared to Israel’s borders with Syria and the Gaza Strip. Southern Lebanon has been the only region that continued to be stable despite the presence of Resistance groups. And the underlying reason for this is the 2006 war that changed the balance of power between Hezbollah and Israel. During that war, Israel faced a formidable foe in Lebanon for the first time. Hezbollah showed much prowess and capability, facing down a foe that had believed its self-proclaimed delusion of being invincible.

The lesson Israel learned from the 2006 war was that no Israeli provocations and aggressions against Lebanon would go unanswered. This red line was respected by Israel throughout its so-called “campaign between wars,” a military doctrine mostly aimed to confront Iran’s spheres of influence in the region while keeping the confrontation below the threshold of an all-out war, to eliminate its regional influence and undermine its nuclear program.

Despite being a Resistance stronghold, southern Lebanon was spared Israeli military strikes and bombing until most recently. In what appeared to be a bid to change the rules of engagement between Israel and Lebanon, Israel launched at least two airstrikes on Lebanon, the most severe such strikes since 2006, after unidentified gunmen fired three rockets at Israel on Wednesday.

The Israeli aggression came at a time when even the Israelis themselves concluded that Hezbollah was not behind the last event. Israeli Brigadier-General Nitzan Nuriel, the former head of Israel’s counterterrorism bureau, admitted that it is more likely that it is Palestinians than Hezbollah. “I believe Hezbollah is not behind the last event,” Nuriel noted.

However, Israel chose to proceed with its plan to commit aggression against Lebanon in an apparent effort to test the waters and see if Hezbollah still attached importance to the rules established after the 2006 war.

It was in these circumstances that Israeli warplanes carried out two raids on the town of Mahmudiya, about 12 kilometers from the Israeli border. They struck an open area.

This aggression prompted Hezbollah to restore balance by responding to Israel. On Friday, the Resistance in a statement claimed responsibility for the rockets fired from the Arqoub area towards the occupied Shebaa Farms, declaring that “the groups of the martyr Ali Kamel Mohsen and the martyr Muhammad Qassem Tahan in the Islamic Resistance bombed open lands in the vicinity of the Israeli occupation sites in the Shebaa Farms with dozens of 122mm rockets.” And this was in response to “Israeli air raids on open lands in the Al-Jarmaq and Al-Shawakir areas last Thursday night.”

Following the Resistance’s response, video footage uploaded on social media platforms purportedly showed a few people getting in the ways of a Hezbollah vehicle that carried rocket launchers. As usual, some media outlets started propagating misleading analyses about the people of southern Lebanon getting fed up with the resistance group.

Hezbollah issued a statement explaining what happened. “At 11:15 a.m. on Friday, the Islamic Resistance responded to the Israeli aggression by targeting the vicinity of Israeli enemy posts in Shebaa Farms with dozens of rockets fired from woodlands that are far from residential areas,” the statement said. “The Resistance has been and will stay keen to ensure the safety of its people.”

Lebanese Al-Akhbar newspaper quoted security sources as saying that those who intercepted the Hezbollah vehicle were supporters of former pro-Israel Lahd militiamen. They ambushed Hezbollah rocketry unit which carried out the attack on the open areas near Zionist military posts in occupied Shebaa Farms.

The sources added that the former Lahd militiamen played a vital role in ambushing and seizing the truck loaded with a launcher and rockets by inciting the locals to congregate around the vehicle.

But this suspicious incident failed to overshadow the importance of Hezbollah’s response, which once again reaffirmed to Israel that its aggression will always be answered.

In his recent speech, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah underlined this. He stressed on Saturday that the Resistance won’t allow the Israeli enemy to change the rules of engagements, warning that the Israeli army will be destroyed in any future war. In a televised address via Al-Manar on the fifteenth anniversary of divine victory in the 2006 July War, Sayyed Nasrallah said that the balance of deterrence is the most strategic achievement of the 33-day war.

He described the Israeli aerial aggression on south Lebanon on Thursday as a dangerous development, elaborating on the Resistance retaliation in Shebaa Farms which took place on Friday. He also noted that Hezbollah doesn’t fear a war with the Zionist entity, affirming that the Lebanese Resistance party is fully prepared to confront any Israeli war.

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah asserted on Tuesday that Hezbollah rejects the early parliamentary election in Lebanon and supports holding it on the scheduled time despite all the circumstances.

Addressing Al-Manar celebration on the Channel’s 30th anniversary, Sayyed Nasrallah called on the political parties demanding the early election to contribute to the cabinet formation that can address the socioeconomic crisis and added that they just intend to achieve partisan, not national, gains.

Sayyed Nasrallah added that Hezbollah is still exerting all the possible efforts to form the new government that can tackle the power shortage and scarcity of energy sources and foodstuffs, calling on the parties concerned with the creation process to take the scenes of this crisis into consideration.

Sayyyed Nasrallah pointed out that the crisis in Lebanon dates back to around 40 years amid various circumstances and is caused mainly by the weak performance of the public institutions, adding that ongoing stalemate may persist despite the efforts exerted by Hezbollah and House Speaker Nabih Berri.

Hezbollah Leader considered that, since the radical solution to the economic crisis can never be reached in the short term, the government must address the current situation by waging a war against monopoly and arresting the monopolizers, describing them as murderers and traitors and offering the government 20 thousand volunteers in face of this lesion.

Sayyed Nasrallah indicated that the fuel crisis which obliges hundreds of cars to lineup at the gas station is humiliating, adding that government can address this predicament by one courageous decision–importing fuel from Iran.

In this regard, Sayyed Nasrallah pointed out that the Iranian offer to sell Lebanon fuel in the Lebanese pound is still valid, warning against surrendering to the US pressures aimed at preventing Lebanon from making this deal.

Sayyed Nasrallah added that all the reports about rationalizing the government subsidies are incorrect, wondering whether the procrastination in the governmental file aims at cancelling all such subsidies as the IMF aid program stipulates.

If the Lebanese government fails to address the fuel crisis, Hezbollah will purchase fuel from Iran, Sayyed Nasrallah said.

“We will bring the fuel ships to Beirut port, and let the state prevent bringing fuel to the Lebanese people.”

Sayyed Nasrallah added that approving the financing card that will around 750 thousand families, reiterating that the creation of the new government is the basic requirement of confronting the crisis.

Finally, Sayyed Nasrallah stressed that Al-Manar TV will continue to followup the upcoming victories, reassuring that he is in good health and reiterating his hope that he will pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque in A-Quds.

The US Treasury Department on Tuesday imposed new sanctions on seven Lebanese linked to the militant Iran-backed Hezbollah group and its financial arm.

The measures are the latest against Hezbollah, which Washington considers a terrorist group and has targeted with penalties for years.

The development comes as Lebanon is experiencing the worst economic and financial crisis in its modern history, including a loss of trust in the country’s once booming banking sector.

The Treasury said six of the seven sanctioned were the group’s “shadow bankers,” who used the cover of personal accounts at certain Lebanese banks to evade sanctions against Hezbollah’s financial arm. They transferred approximately $500 million over the past decade, it said.

The seventh sanctioned person, Ibrahim Daher, is one of Hezbollah’s chief financial executives who oversees the group’s overall budget, including the funding for its operations.

The Treasury said al-Qard al-Hasan — Hezbollah’s financial arm which the US has sanctioned since 2007 — has taken a more prominent role over the years. Founded since 1982 and registered as a charity in Lebanon, the association is used by Hezbollah to gain access to the international financial system, the Treasury said.

While the alleged charity “purports to serve the Lebanese people, in practice it illicitly moves funds through shell accounts and facilitators,” the Treasury said. “By hoarding hard currency that is desperately needed by the Lebanese economy, (it) allows (Hezbollah) to build its own support base and compromise the stability of the Lebanese state.”

Al-Qard al-Hasan, considered Lebanon’s largest non-banking financial institution, stepped in amid the latest economic crisis to provide a vital lifeline for many. It has seen a significant increase in clients.

Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, recently said the association has provided $3.7 billion in loans to some 1.8 million people since its founding.

Hezbollah “continues to abuse the Lebanese financial sector and drain Lebanon’s financial resources at an already dire time,” said Andrea Gacki, director of the Treasury’s office of foreign assets control.

“Such actions demonstrate (Hezbollah’s) disregard for financial stability, transparency, or accountability in Lebanon,” she added.

The Treasury said Daher leads Hezbollah’s Central Finance Unit, overseeing its income, budget and coordinating payments of its members while the other six participated in shadow banking activities on behalf of Hezbollah, maintaining joint bank accounts in Lebanese banks that allowed for transfer of money within the formal financial system.
