In a post on X on Thursday, Kazem Gharibabadi, who serves as head of the Iranian Judiciary’s High Council for Human Rights, said the Islamic Republic welcomed the raid by the French police on MKO’s main headquarters in the Paris suburb of Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône that led to the sealing of the premises and the detention of at least three members of the group.

“We welcome the attack of the French police on the main headquarters of the MKO terrorist group, thorough inspection of the headquarters, the arrest of three members of the faction and the sealing of this headquarters. This operation was monitored live by Iran,” he said.

“Iran will leave no safe place for terrorists,” Gharibabadi asserted.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that France’s security forces on Wednesday raided the headquarters of the MKO – also known as the so-called People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK) – and detained three of its members.

The raid occurred at a site housing MKO’s TV studio, the report said, adding that the group had to substitute live programming with archival content for several hours.

According to the report, security forces also seized a cache of weapons hidden in the headquarters, suggesting the persistent engagement in terrorist and criminal activities by this group.

The MKO terrorist group is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Iranian civilians during the past four decades.

The notorious group sided with Saddam Hussein during Iraq’s war with Iran in the 1980s but fell out of favor with Baghdad after he was toppled by a US-led invasion in 2003.

Eleven women who accused the French former model agency boss Gerald Marie of sexual misconduct and rape have been invited to Paris to meet investigators, in the next step of a criminal investigation.

The women, who are based all over the world, are expected to fly to Paris together in the coming weeks to be interviewed by the Paris Brigade de Protection des Mineurs, the city police’s child protection department.

Marie, who is now in his 70s and living in Spain, has strongly denied the accusations, which include two from women who say he raped them when they were minors. All the alleged incidents are said to have occurred in the 1980s and 1990s.

Several of the women now preparing to travel to France were among 16 accusers who spoke to the Guardian last year about Marie, who was one of the most powerful men in the fashion industry.

The request, sent to the women by a French police investigator, said an in-person meeting would enable them to formally submit signed testimony and allow the investigation to progress.

There has been criticism of French law enforcement authorities over their handling of sexual assault investigations involving minors after several high-profile cases failed to result in prosecutions.

Anne-Claire Le Jeune, the lawyer representing Marie’s alleged victims, said: “This is an important first step and demonstrates that the French authorities are taking the allegations seriously.”

Prosecutors in France opened their investigation into Marie in September last year, initially over allegations from four women. They included Carré Otis, a top model in the 90s, who alleged that Marie – who was then the European boss of Elite model agency – repeatedly raped her when she was 17.

She said the abuse took place while she was living in the spare room of the apartment he shared with Marie’s then-wife, the supermodel Linda Evangelista, in 1986.

Since then, eight more women have submitted their testimonies to the French prosecutor, bringing the total to 12. The Guardian understands 11 have received formal invitations to travel to Paris, while the 12th is expected to be contacted in the coming week.

Marie’s lawyers did not respond to a request for comment about the latest development in the investigation. However, they have previously denied all the allegations against him, saying he was “extremely affected” by the accusations and would fight the criminal case.

“He intends to actively participate in the manifestation of the truth within the scope of the opened criminal investigation,” they have said.

One of the women planning to travel to Paris is Shawna Lee, a Canadian former model who previously told the Guardian that Marie raped her in 1991 when she was 15, also in the apartment he shared with Evangelista in Paris.

There is no suggestion that Evangelista was aware of any of these allegations at the time and she has since praised the “courage and strength” shown by women now accusing her ex-husband.

Lee said the decision to interview her and the other accusers felt like a “very important” step. “I am proud of myself and the other women who have had the courage to speak up and help create change for girls moving forward,” she said.

A spokesperson for the Paris police said: “As this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot give you any information.”

The women are expected to travel to Paris as soon as Covid restrictions are lifted. Le Jeune said the women planned to arrive in Paris at the same time “to create impact and raise awareness of the case”.

Police in Paris have cleared out a temporary migrant camp set up in the middle of the French capital, clashing with pro-migrant protesters. The demonstrators say the migrants set up the camp to demand accommodation.

Rows of identical tents sprung up on the Place de la République in central Paris on Monday.

The camp was organized by Utopia56, a migrant advocacy group, who say that the 450 or so migrants in the encampment were left homeless when police cleared 2,000 migrants from a shanty town in the suburb of Saint-Denis last week.

Riot police soon arrived on the scene and started dismantling the pop-up camp.

The sweep didn’t go completely smoothly. Those who refused to leave were muscled out by the riot cops, while pro-migrant protesters who came between the police and the tents were met with batons and shields. Actu reported that some members of the Council of Paris were present, and tried to stop the clearout.

Utopia56 has demanded that the French government provide “1,000 immediate accommodation places” for homeless migrants, and called on the state to set up a “permanent reception system” to house more entering the country.

The total number of illegal migrants living in Paris is unknown. A migrant rights group last year estimated that 2,000 were sleeping on the streets of the French capital, while a 2018 government report claimed that between 150,000 and 400,000 were living either homeless or in accommodation in the suburban region of Seine-Saint-Denis alone.

French police officers began dismantling an illegal migrant camp near Paris on Tuesday morning where more than 2,000 people lived in difficult conditions.

The operation to clear the camp located under a motorway slip road in Saint Denis, northeast of Paris, and resettle its residents started at around 07:00 CET. Seventy buses were to take the migrants to reception centres and sports halls in the Ile-de-France region.

Law enforcement authorities said on Twitter that the operation would “guarantee the safety and health of all, especially against COVID-19.”

Paris Police chief Didier Lallement added that “these camps are unacceptable”.

“This operation aims to ensure that people in a regular situation are sheltered and those in an irregular situation are not intended to remain on the territory,” he said.

The camp housed more than 2,000 people, according to the France terre d’asile (“France country of asylum”) NGO. The majority of them were men, primarily from Afghanistan, Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia.

The NGO described the operation on Twitter as “vital” and “long-awaited.” Its director, Pierre Henry added: “I welcome the sheltering of some 2,000 people, temporary residents of a place of indignity near the Stade de France.”

“In five years, this must be the 301st operation of this kind. Reception in safety and dignity is possible,” he added.

However, the Solidarité Migrants Wilson NGO deplored that “as usual, there are more police officers than social workers.”

“A lot of questions from migrants (where are the buses taking us…) go unanswered.

“No mediator, according to WATIZAT [another NGO]. It’s historic, the fist evacuation organised only by the police without the help of the town hall or administrative aid institutions,” it added.
