0830 GMT — Egypt was set to host the latest talks aiming for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas as Gaza officials reported more deadly bombardment in the nearly five-month-old war.

A senior Hamas official told AFP that a delegation from the Palestinian group would discuss with mediators a proposal for a six-week truce after a US official said Israel had “more or less accepted” its terms.

Envoys from the United States, Qatar and Hamas have arrived in Cairo, state-linked media reported, as all sides have been scrambling to lock in a truce before Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month that begins on March 10 or 11.

The Hamas official said that if Israel were to meet its demands — which include a military withdrawal from Gaza and stepped-up humanitarian aid — this would “pave the way for an agreement within the next 24-48 hours”.

The health ministry in Gaza said at least 90 Palestinians had been killed in the past 24 hours, including 14 family members whose house in the southern Rafah refugee camp had been hit.

Mediators are expected to reconvene in Cairo and search for a formula acceptable to Israel and Palestinian resistance groups for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, sources with knowledge of the talks said after foreign governments resorted to airdrops to aid desperate civilians in the Palestinian enclave.

Israeli and Hamas delegations were expected to arrive in Cairo, two Egyptian security sources said, although another source briefed on the talks said Israel would not send a delegation until it got a full list of hostages who are still alive.

A senior US official said that the framework for a six-week pause in fighting was in place, with Israel’s agreement, and now depended on Hamas agreeing to release hostages it has held in Gaza since its attacks on southern Israel on October 7.

“The path to a ceasefire right now literally at this hour is straightforward. And there’s a deal on the table. There’s a framework deal. The Israelis have more or less accepted it,” the official told reporters. “The onus right now is on Hamas.”

0010 GMT — US President Biden has said he trusts Tel Aviv will investigate itself after Israeli troops fired on starving Palestinians at an aid site in besieged Gaza, killing at least 115 Palestinians and wounding 760 others, may of them critically.

Earlier, the White House said that it believes Israel should investigate the killings of 115 people in Gaza City after Israeli troops opened fire while civilians waited for food aid, defending the country’s ability to look into its own potential wrongdoing.

“We’ve asked the government of Israel to investigate, and it’s our assessment that they’re taking this seriously and they are looking into what occurred, so as to avoid tragedies like this from happening again,” National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters.

Kirby added that they have not given Israel a timeline to complete their investigation.

Kirby said Israel was “seriously” investigating the aid convoy deaths. However, Washington would continue to support Israel militarily despite the growing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, Kirby said.

“We are still helping Israel with their needs to defend themselves,” he said.

2345 GMT — Biden says ‘hoping’ for Gaza ceasefire deal by Ramadan

US President Joe Biden said he was “hoping” for a ceasefire deal in besieged Gaza by the Muslim holy month of Ramadan but agreement was still not sealed.

“I’m hoping so; we’re still working real hard on it. We’re not there yet,” he told reporters at the White House when asked if he expected a deal by Ramadan, which will start on March 10 or 11, depending on the lunar calendar.

“We’ll get there, but we’re not there yet — we may not get there,” Biden added, without elaborating, as he headed to his helicopter to spend the weekend at the presidential Camp David retreat.

2102 GMT — Global media outlets sign letter urging protection of journalists in Gaza

Senior leaders at multiple global media outlets have signed a letter urging Israeli authorities to protect journalists in besieged Gaza, saying reporters have been working in unprecedented conditions during Israel’s invasion on the enclave and faced “grave personal risk.”

Among media outlets whose top editors signed the letter were the Associated Press, AFP, Reuters, the New York Times, the Washington Post, BBC, CNN, the Guardian, Financial Times, Der Spiegel and Haaretz.

Committee to Protect Journalists, which released the letter signed by the leaders of 59 news global organisations, said the war has been the “most dangerous ever” for journalists.

The killings, most of them children and women, in Gaza amount to nearly 1 percent of the territory’s pre-war population — the latest indication of the 11-week-old Israeli aggression’s staggering human toll.

Israel’s aerial and ground invasion has been one of the most devastating assaults in recent history, displacing nearly 85 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million people and leveling wide swaths of the tiny blockaded enclave.

More than half a million people in Gaza — a quarter of the population — are starving, according to a report from the United Nations and other agencies.

After many delays, the UN Security Council adopted a watered-down resolution on Friday calling for immediately speeding up aid deliveries to desperate civilians in Gaza.

The United States won the removal of a tougher call for an “urgent suspension of hostilities” between Israel and the Hamas resistance group.

It abstained from the vote, as did Russia, which wanted a stronger language.

Israel issues new ultimatum to besieged Palestinians

The US also negotiated the removal of language that would have given the UN authority to inspect aid going into Gaza, something Israel says it must do to ensure material does not reach Hamas.

Hamas said in a statement that the UN resolution should have demanded an immediate halt to Israel’s assault, and it blamed the United States for pushing “to empty the resolution of its essence” before Friday’s Security Council vote.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, meanwhile, reiterated his longstanding call for a humanitarian ceasefire.

“The violations of international humanitarian law [Hamas October 7 surprise blitz] can never justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people, and they do not free Israel from its own legal obligations under international law,” the secretary-general said.

Israel, shielded by the United States, has resisted international pressure to scale back its assault.

The military has said that months of fighting lie ahead in southern Gaza, an area packed with the vast majority of the enclave’s 2.3 million people, many of whom were forced to flee Israeli bombardment.

The Israeli military said late on Thursday that it is sending more ground forces, including combat engineers, to Khan Younis to target Hamas fighters above ground and in tunnels.

On Friday, it forced tens of thousands of residents to leave their homes in Burej, an urban refugee camp, and surrounding communities in central Gaza, suggesting a ground assault there could be next.

Mustafa Abu Taha, a Palestinian farm worker, said many areas of his hard-hit Gaza City neighborhood of Shijaiyah have become inaccessible because of massive destruction from airstrikes. “They are hitting anything moving,” he said of Israeli forces.

Rising death toll, hunger

Gaza’s Health Ministry said on Friday that it has documented 20,057 deaths in the fighting and 53,320 wounded.

It has previously said that roughly two-thirds of the dead were women or minors. Israel’s military claimed 139 of its soldiers had been killed in the ground invasion.

It alleges it has killed thousands of Hamas fighters, including about 2,000 in the past three weeks, but it has not presented any evidence to back up the claim.

For most of the war, Israel also stopped entry of food, water, fuel and other supplies except for truck convoys of aid from Egypt, which cover only a fraction of the needs in Gaza.

Because of insufficient aid entering Gaza, the extent of starvation has eclipsed the near-famines of recent years in Afghanistan and Yemen, and the risk of famine is “increasing each day,” Thursday’s UN report said.32
