On Thursday, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) expressed its readiness to cooperate with Arab countries over a solution for the Syrian crisis based on UN Resolution No. 2254.

The AANES, in a statement publicized on its official website, welcomed Syria’s readmission to Arab League following a decision by Arab foreign ministers on May 7.

The AANES sees Syria’s return to the Arab bloc as a positive step, hoping it would open the perspectives for communication and joint work with each of the Syrian government and other Syrian parties that believe in a democratic political solution, as well as with Arab states.

The statement added that the AANES can play a key role in the political solution given the political, economic, security, and humanitarian capabilities it enjoys.

Additionally, the administration called on Arab countries to communicate with all Syrians rather than one party to the detriment of others since the Syrian political solution requires Syrian censuses and effective and serious steps that the AANES showed through its political initiative, the statement read.

On April 18, the AANES launched an initiative called the “Peaceful Resolution of the Syrian Crisis,” in accordance with United Nations resolutions, after the failure of all international initiatives.

The AANES’ initiative called on the United Nations and all international actors in Syria to play a positive and effective role, and contribute to a joint solution with the Syrian government, AANES, and national democratic forces, and reach a democratic and peaceful solution in Syria.

“Our initiative is a confirmation of the territorial integrity of Syria, the equal rights of all Syrians, establishing a decentralized, democratic and pluralistic system where all Syrians can live in freedom, and the equitable distribution of the natural and economic resources,” said Badran Chiya Kurd, co-chair of the Foreign Relations Department of AANES on April 21.

Additionally, it [AANES] showed readiness to coordinate with Arab countries and the UN to solve crucial issues that require joint work, including fighting terrorism and drugs and the Syrian refugee’s issue in the neighboring countries, according to the statement.

The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the SDF defeated ISIS militarily there.

History will not forget that some Arab countries have waivered visas for Ukrainians to express their sympathy with them on the seventh day of the war in their country, but they continue the war they have been imposing on Yemen for seven years

In less than 20 days, the Yemeni war will enter its eighth year, a war that began on March 26, 2015, and has so far left more than 4 million displaced and hundreds of thousands killed. The Yemenis are facing the most horrific humanitarian conditions of the 21st century as a result of the Saudi coalition war. Famine and disease have spread as a result of this war, and yet the siege of Yemen by the Saudis continues.

Russia’s war against Ukraine began 11 days ago. Although no war is acceptable because civilians are the main victims of the wars, the level of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine is never comparable to the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen. However, some Arab countries, which are either stained with the blood of the Yemenis or have remained silent in the face of the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen, have taken a human rights stand against the displaced Ukrainians.

The UAE government, which has been complicit in Saudi Arabia’s crimes against Yemen for the past seven years, has now announced that it will open its borders to Ukrainian refugees. Some Arab countries have also called on Russia and Ukraine to exercise restraint and oppose military action. This is while Yemen is a Muslim and Arabic-speaking country, and its people are among the poorest in the West Asian region.

The double standards on the war in Yemen and Ukraine is not just about the Arab countries. The United States and European countries claiming advocacy for human rights have also clearly taken double standards on these two crises. While these countries strongly condemn Russia’s war against Ukraine, and their affiliated media frequently publish pictures of Ukrainian refugees, the Saudi coalition’s seven-year war against Yemen has not even been accompanied by a resolution condemning Saudi Arabia, and fewer pictures of Yemeni refugees in their media has been published.

These double standards were even criticized in Western circles by Western personalities. According to experts, the Ukraine war has more than ever exposed the double standards of Western countries and shown how they remain silent about the killings and bloodshed in Yemen and take a racist stance on the Ukraine war.

“The United States, Britain and France and others are arming Saudi Arabia, the most authoritarian regime in the world, against Yemen,” said Richard Boyd, a member of the Irish Parliament for the European Union.

“More than 337,000 people and 10,000 children have been killed. Has any action been taken against the United States, Britain and France to arm Saudi Arabia or against Saudi Arabia itself?”

Of course, this is not the first time that these countries and their puppet regimes in West Asia have taken double standards on human rights, and it will not be the last. There is no doubt that Ukrainian refugees should be supported, but Yemeni refugees are also innocent civilians who have been victims of war and atrocities. Human rights have become a tool to pursue the interests of these countries.
