1142 GMT — Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati emphasised the need to remove weapons from southern Lebanon, saying the country is embarking on a new phase that should be marked by the return of stability.

During a press conference following his meeting with newly-elected President Joseph Aoun at the presidential palace in Beirut, Mikati revealed that President Aoun had asked him to continue overseeing government affairs until a new administration was formed.

“We discussed the challenges ahead and the presidential speech, which sets the direction for any new government,” Mikati said.

“We are now at a point where we must see the removal of weapons from the south of the Litani River and the establishment of peace across the whole of Lebanon,” he affirmed.

The director of al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza has raised alarms over the life-threatening conditions faced by patients and medical staff due to targeted attacks by the Israeli army.

Speaking to Anadolu, Mohamed Saleha revealed that Israeli forces had directly fired bullets and bombs at the hospital and its surroundings causing severe damage, including the burning of nearby homes.

Saleha emphasised that the facility, located in Tel al-Zaatar near the Jabalia refugee camp, is now the only operational hospital in northern Gaza following the closure of the Kamal Adwan and Indonesian hospitals due to Israeli bombardment.

A legal case against Boaz Ben David, an Israeli soldier accused of war crimes during the Gaza war, has been submitted to a Swedish court, the Hind Rajab Foundation has announced.

“The complaint, filed with Swedish authorities, accuses Ben David of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and possible acts of genocide during the recent military operations in Gaza,” the foundation said in a statement.

A public opinion poll published revealed that 88 percent of Israelis support a hostage exchange agreement as PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party faces declining popularity due to the prolonged war in Gaza.

The poll also indicated that if elections were held today, Netanyahu would struggle to form a government.

His political bloc is projected to secure only 49 seats in the Knesset, compared to 61 seats for the opposition.

An official Palestinian tally of direct deaths in the Israel-Hamas war likely undercounted the number of casualties by 41 percent through the middle of 2024 as Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure unravelled, according to a study.

The peer-reviewed statistical analysis published in The Lancet journal was conducted by academics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Yale University and other institutions.

Using a statistical method called capture-recapture analysis, the researchers sought to assess the death toll from Israel’s air and ground campaign in Gaza in the first nine months of the war, between October 2023 and the end of June 2024.

They estimated 64,260 deaths due to traumatic injury during this period, about 41 percent higher than the official Palestinian Health Ministry count. The study said 59.1 percent were women, children and people over the age of 65. It did not provide an estimate of Palestinian combatants among the dead.

More than 46,000 people have been killed in the Gaza war, according to Palestinian health officials.

A senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) warned of severe consequences from two Israeli laws targeting the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) that are set to take effect soon.

Intense forest fires broke out in northern Israel overnight on Tuesday following a surge of rocket and drone strikes fired from Lebanon.

Israeli police said that the fires prompted evacuations in the northern city of Kiryat Shmona.

Fires were also reported in the Mount Adir area, as well as the northern kibbutz of Amiad, where fires consumed an estimated 400 hectares of land.

The fires led to the closure of several roads in the Galilee area, with more than 30 firefighting teams working through the night to contain the blazes.

By Tuesday morning, most fires were reported to be under control, according to Israeli media.

Six Israeli reservist soldiers were taken to hospital with minor injuries due to smoke inhalation, the army said.

“The forces gained control over the locations of fire, and at this stage, no human life is at risk,” it added.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said it was monitoring the fires, which first broke out on Monday after Hezbollah launched a series of rocket and drone attacks into Israel.

Hostilities along the Israel-Lebanon border, ongoing since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, have intensified in recent days.

Hezbollah fires drone squadron

On Monday, Hezbollah said it launched a squadron of drones at Israeli units in Galilee in retaliation for the assassination of one of its members in the southern Lebanese town of Zrariyeh.

While the Lebanese group has used drones since the outbreak of the war on 7 October 2023 along the Israel border, the recent announcement marks the first time it has deployed a squadron of them.

In addition to drones, Hezbollah also said it launched dozens of Katyusha rockets at Israeli targets in Syria’s occupied Golan Heights this week.

Throughout the war, the group consistently stated that it possessed weapons capable of reaching deep into Israeli territory.

Earlier in May, Hezbollah said it had deployed attack drones armed with S-5 rockets against Israeli military positions, marking the first time it has publicly acknowledged using this type of weaponry since the hostilities began.

Hezbollah also released a video showing a drone en route to an Israeli target in Metula, northern Israel. The footage captured the moment two rockets were deployed before the drone exploded.

Lebanese media reported that the drone was loaded with approximately 25kg of high explosives.

Recently, hostilities along the Israel-Lebanon border, with both the Israeli military and Hezbollah extending their strikes beyond the usual border strip where the exchanges of fire have been concentrated.

On Sunday, Israeli air strikes killed two Lebanese civilian men from the town of Houla, where they had stayed throughout the war to herd their cattle, according to Reuters.

The Israeli military also bombed several villages in southern and eastern Lebanon.

One strike on the southern village of Siddikine, located inland from the coastal city of Tyre, wounded 16 children between the ages of four and 14.

Israeli bombing of the town of Bint Jbeil destroyed part of its famed old souq. Images shared by local media showed that the strike damaged several shops, buildings and homes.

Lebanon faces high risks of wildfires due to Israeli attacks, mainly due to the use of white phosphorous, according to a report in L’Orient Today.

Last week, wildfires broke out in several southern villages following artillery shelling and white phosphorus attacks, the report said.

Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed almost 450 people, including at least 80 civilians, according to an AFP tally.

On the Israeli side, at least 14 soldiers and 11 civilians have been killed, according to the army.

The continuation of the Israeli regime’s war on Gaza would undermine the opportunities for peace in the region, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lebanon Bouhabib said in a joint press conference with the caretaker foreign minister of Iran, held in Beirut on Monday.

He also noted that Lebanon and Iran share views about the threats posed by the lingering onslaught on the Gaza Strip.

For his part, the Iranian diplomat said he has visited Beirut for talks on the regional issues, particularly the situation in Gaza and Rafah.

Stressing the need for collective action against the Zionist regime’s acts of aggression, Ali Baqeri said efforts are being made to hold a ministerial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in this regard.

The Iranian caretaker minister also hailed the Islamic resistance forces of Lebanon as the anchorage of stability and calm in the region, stressing that Iran pushes for Lebanon’s stability, tranquility and progress.
